The Ins and Outs of Publishing…

You know when you start out writing all you’re hoping for is to get a story down on paper. Then you move onto the next level and start worrying about craft. This stage may take some time or remain indefinitely. Finally you finish a piece of work, or several, which is often the case and you are ready to move on to publishing. This is where things get weird. There is this whole other language existing in the world of publishing. One that truly needs a decoder ring to figure out. Suddenly you’re dealing with ARC’s, read throughs, master copies, promos, .tifs of covers, and line edits.

Now I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty sure none of this was covered in school when I was attending. I admit that has been some years, but I can honestly say I don’t recall any of those words being used.

This brings us to my current predicament, trying to play catch up. Never fun, but often necessary when venturing out toward new horizons.

What A Treat…

My local writer’s group hosted an event with two fabulous authors, Vicki Lewis Thompson and Carly Phillips. (Yeah, NYT bestseller Carly Phillips.) It was fantastic to hear the vast knowledge these two women had to share. Their wit and humor were contagious.

I could sit here and list all the things I learned from them, but to be honest it would take to long. Suffice to say I’ll be taking a second, third, and forth look at my notes as I let their words digest and take root.

A Sad Day in Our Household…

Today we got some devastating news, our Aunt Joan has passed away. Words cannot convey our sadness, nor are they worthy of representing her greatness. A ground breaker in London, she made inroads into establishments that women only dreamed of working in. Her hard work and dedication opened doors for many to walk through.

England has lost an amazing woman, my husband’s mum has lost a loving sister, and we’ve lost a precious aunt. I just wish everyone could have had the opportunity to meet this fantastic lady. She will be sorely missed.

Latest Book Cover…

Well I had some exciting news today. The artist finished with my book cover and I must say it’s lovely, particularly the colors. Chris has done a fine job bringing my hero Eros to life. Click here to see the cover.

I have to say that once a cover has been created the book itself comes to life for me. I think until that happens it seems kind of make believe. If you know what I mean?

Then there’s that moment the book is released and I swear all I can manage to do is hold my breath and wait. It’s like listening for a pin to drop. Tension infuses your chest, your eyes focus taking in the most minute detail, and your stomach balls up into a knot. And that’s just my positive reactions. LOL!

For all that’s said and done, I still find the whole process incredibly fulfilling.

April Fools…

I can honestly say I never liked this holiday/whatever you want to call it. I was always fortunate to only fall for one joke, during the day, but that was enough. I know for pranksters this is a grand day for letting loose. I just wish they’d do it somewhere else. LOL!
