When does writing become like work..?

I was speaking with a friend the other day, who happens to have a couple of book deals with one of the major publishers. She told me she was chanting to herself about how much she loves to write. She said she needed to do so or she’d go insane. Which actually got me to thinking…when does writing become like work?

Stephen King insists if you think of it like work then you’re in the wrong business, but I disagree. I think anytime you take a craft seriously there will be moments when the sense of fun is replaced by a feeling of hard work. I believe this holds true no matter what you do. I certainly know as a writer I have my moments where every word I type is like getting a root canal.Keep in mind, this doesn’t make me like writing any less. Yes, sometimes it’s a challenge to keep going, but the passion is still there, outshining the bad.
