They tried to tie it into WW1, but it didn't quite work. I think the trouble was for several minutes you weren't sure what time period you were dealing with. It seemed like the forties, but for a while, I thought it was an alternate reality. (Nevermind the robot monsters. LOL!) I think your dh's description is accurate. But the dh and his kid went yesterday. He said it was the best bad movie he'd ever seen. The backdrop and computer effects were amazing, according to him, but the logic of the "taking over the world" plot was just out there in a BIG way, LOL!
