Draft

Wow! I know I’m a little slow on noticing these kinds of things, but did you all know that there’s a bill that’s been presented that would draft men and women age 18 to 26 making the rounds right now? Apparently, if it passes, it could go into effect as early as April 2005. Yikes! That means my niece and nephews could be drafted. Not good.

  1. That bill was presented by Democrats in January of 2003, long before the Iraq war, but it wasn’t intended as a “draft.” It’s a proposal for what many countries do–2 years mandatory service to the country, followed by 4 years of college education. It’s a bill Kerry is very fond of as a way to create jobs and increase the country’s education level. Bush is against such a thing, and so is the U.S. military–which is against ANY kind of draft. No one wants to work beside people who don’t want to be there.

Here’s a link describing the bill:

Type HR 163 in the search box.

  2. Yep, I read that. Pretty scary stuff. Aren’t the Republicans in control of the House and the Senate? Can’t remember, but I thought so.

  3. LOL! Beats me, but don’t worry–the bill has mostly been killed and has a snowball’s chance in hell of ever passing, especially because the dems say it was mainly an anti-war statement. The rumor is that the bill is starting to circulate again in the event that Kerry wins–he can sign it–but that’s probably just election-time campaign rumors that start running amok for both sides at this time. It’s really getting annoying! :(

  4. I hear you. I can’t wait until the election is over. Thank goodness for Tivo. :-)

  5. Ohhh no. The military is one of the few circumstances where I am such a GIRL. Me and boot-camp mix like oil and water.

  6. I hear you Sidonie. Bless the hearts of those who serve because I know I’d fail the physical and end up in the brig. (I’m not good with authority. ;-)
