Synopses

To many writers the above word is synonymous with hell. I am no exception. The first synopsis I ever wrote was easy. (I’m not saying it was great.) I approached the writing of it much like I approach playing a game, with the expectation that it would be fun. Somewhere along the line my attitude changed. I can’t pinpoint the precise moment, but I’m guessing it occurred when I realized that publishing wasn’t a game, but a business. I’m now on a quest to recover my previous ‘tude.

In the meantime, how do you all cope with writing these torturous passages?

  1. I actually don’t mind them. I know most writers hate them, but I find them a good way to recap the story. Then again, I also LIKE writing short stories. LOL

  2. I’ve been struggling with my first synopsis. How do I cope? Lots of swearing, whining to my CPs, and tons of chocolate. And there’s always a good dose of, “Crap. What did I get myself in to?”

Hmm. That doesn’t sound much like coping, does it?

  3. How do I cope? Lots and lots of alcohol…

  4. Sasha, March straight to the bathroom and take your temperature. LOL! ;-)

  5. Lynn, I definitely like the swearing and chocolate part of the equation. I think if I mix that with Larissa’s alcohol I’ll be set. Not sure if the synopsis would be any better, but I wouldn’t care.

  6. OH, I loath the synposis!! I like the chocolate and alcohol coping suggestions.

  7. Bless her, SAsha has helped me once–I’m verbose in my synopsi –but for the most part I don’t mind writing them, once I got a handle on HOW to write them.

    LOL@chocolate and alcohol!

  8. I’ve YET to get a handle on how to write them. I’m convinced I’m going to bore the editors cross-eyed with this synopsis. LOL! I’m all for alcohol and chocolate. It’ll numb the pain. ;-)

  9. I don’t mind them! I just can’t do query letters…
