I think as my career progresses (notice I didn't say the 'if' I was thinking ;) that I'll have to write in multiple genres to keep it interesting for myself. And you're right, it is so freeing to try something new that you've never done before. I find I can write so much better, and enjoy it so much more, if I can skip around and write different sub-genres within my genre.
