Valentine’s Day

Yes, I know I’m early, but I can’t be the only one who thinks this holiday is a crock! I’m sure the greeting card companies and the chocolatiers are laughing all the way to the bank.

I remember when I was much younger (think high school) how eagerly I’d wait to see if I received anything for Valentine’s Day. All the girls would practically drool if someone received flowers and chocolate. You’d feel horrible if all you got was a card. (I’ve experienced both.) This was back when I thought it was an extremely special day, not the day where guys try to make up for not being romantic all year. LOL!

I guess that’s why I don’t really like Valentine’s Day. It shouldn’t be like atonement. You shouldn’t be able to make one gesture and expect that to cover the year or a lifetime.

Maybe as a romance writer I’m just sensitive. (wg) Romancing someone does not take just one day, it takes a lifetime. Thank goodness I married a man who understands that concept. Jordan, who’s off to count her blessing…

  1. My husband and I don’t make a big deal out of Valentine’s Day either. It seems somehow artificial, and he says sweet things year-round to me. But, the kids love it–it’s a holiday! That means candy! So I have fun with Valentine’s Day with them.

  2. My husband and I don’t make a big deal, either. But this year he’s coming home on Valentine’s day after being gone for 6 weeks, so…YAY!!!! Big deal this year! *g*

  3. Suzanne, My dh is like that too. We just aren’t into it. He grew up in the UK. The holiday wasn’t very big over there. It’s different if you have kids. I remember it being very exciting when I was a kid because you had to bring a card for everyone in the class. (Yes, this is back in the dark ages. LOL!)

  4. Larissa, That’s wonderful! My guess is ‘any’ day would be Valentine’s Day in that situation. (wg)

  5. Good point, Jordan! *ggg*

  6. Valentine’s Day is not a big deal, and my hubby and I don’t do much for it besides go out to eat. But I must confess, any holiday where I get chocolate is a pretty darn good holiday in my book:-).

  7. I have trouble sitting in a restaurant with all of the simpering, cooing and lovesick couples. Hubby and I are content to cook dinner together, have a bottle of wine and watch a movie. I’m the type of person that loves surprises, so this year I decided to give him a much better gift than a cheesy card and a box of heartshaped chocolates (I love them mind you, but so does my rear.) I booked us a room at an upscale B&B in a little artist community on the coast. There is an inhouse spa and our room overlooks the water. I thought why not have a nice little minibreak holiday at the end of winter. We’re going the end of next month. I guess you could call it a belated Valentine’s gesture, or just an I-love-my-husband one. Either way, it will be two days with nothing to do than just be.

  8. Shannon, That sounds like a wonderful weekend. I’m sure you both will have a wonderful time.:-) I hear you on trying to go to restaurant on Valentine’s Day. It’s worse than prom night.:-/
