I know there are a lot of vamp books being released these days, but nothing has grabbed me by the throat and sunk its fangs in deep, not letting go until the last page. (Yes, I’m feeling dramatic.
Where have all the really great vampire romances gone?
Let me preface this by saying I own all of Christine Feehan’s, Sherrilyn Kenyon’s, Angela Knight’s, and Emma Holly’s vamp books. (wg)
I’ve tried reading Laurell K. Hamilton, who I think is a very good writer, but the stories are not my thing. I picked up Rosemary Laurey’s latest, but I haven’t started it yet. I loved the first book in her vamp series. I also have ALL the Charlaine Harris books. I don’t tend to like books written entirely in first person. I can’t get into the story for some reason. There are exceptions, but they are RARE. I do have Sunshine in my TBR pile, even though it’s not a romance.
So have any vampire or werewolf romance books blown you away recently? If so, please share the titles.

Did you manage to miss If Angels Burn by Lynn Viehl? Best fang fiction I’ve read in years.
Also, Love in Vein by Poppy Z Brite is great stuff. It’s not new, but it’s full of great twists on the vampire theme.
by Charlene July 17th, 2005 at 11:48 amCharlene, I do indeed have ‘If Angels Burn’ in my TBR pile. I also have Love in Vein II. Not sure if it’s as good as number one, but the stories are definitely different.
by Jordan July 17th, 2005 at 11:53 amTHE COMPANION by Susan Squires. I loved it just as much as I loved the Viehl book.
by Ellen Fisher July 17th, 2005 at 12:30 pmI second (or is it third) If Angels Burn. I also have the new Dark Hunter in my TBR pile, but I’m saving it for vacation. When I’m going to force myself to relax. Even if it kills me.
by Steph T. July 17th, 2005 at 12:43 pmThanks Ellen! The Companion is in my TBR pile too. They were giving it away at the RT Convention.
by Jordan Summers July 17th, 2005 at 1:19 pmSteph, I bought the latest Dark Hunter book yesterday. From the sounds of it, I will have to move If Angels Burn up in the pile.
Have fun on vacation.
by Jordan July 17th, 2005 at 1:20 pmIf Angels Burn definitely.
I don’t remember reading any new ones this year that are nearly up to standard. But If Angels Burn should be read ASAP!
by D. Angel July 17th, 2005 at 1:45 pmNo vamps to reccommend. IAB, is in the tbr pile. And know peeps hate on her recently, but I liked the first couple of Vamp books from Anne Rice. Also, I just lurrrve ::drool:: Clay from Kelly Armstrong’s werewolf books: BITTEN, and STOLEN. ::pant pant pant::
Doesn’t Lori O’Clare from EC do great were/shifter books? And, Oh My(!) Shiloh Walker? Yes, yes, I’m biased. Give me an hunkalicious, pure alpha shapeshifter any day, over a bloodsucker. Not that I don’t like the vamps, but wolves really get the juices flowing.
by Jaq July 17th, 2005 at 4:44 pmI’d move up IAB even before the new Dark-Hunters book.
Also…have you read Kelley Armstrong yet?
by Nicole July 17th, 2005 at 6:07 pmHaven’t read any vampire/werewolf stuff in about a year…
But I am trying to write one. And I have a new, healthy respect for the authors who do.
:-O
by raine July 17th, 2005 at 6:20 pmThanks, D. Angel! I’ll move it up right away.
by Jordan July 17th, 2005 at 9:05 pmJaq, I actually loved Interview with the Vampire. I have Lestat in my TBR pile, but I haven’t started it yet. I also have Bitten and Stolen in my TBR pile. Like I said, I pick things up and put things down. I’ve read a few of Lori’s werewolves and I’m pretty sure I’ve read one of Shiloh’s books too.
by Jordan July 17th, 2005 at 9:17 pmNicole, Like I said to Jaq, I do have a few Kelley Armstrong books. I started Bitten, thought it was good, but still put it down. Sigh.
by Jordan July 17th, 2005 at 9:18 pmRaine, Amazing how that works, eh? LOL! Vamp books earned respect from me after I wrote Gothic Passions (a vamp Regency).
by Jordan July 17th, 2005 at 9:20 pmHmmm, I know of at least one vampire romance that’s about to be released soon! ;o)
As a serious answer to your question…I did see an advertisement for a vampire series that’s coming in Sept. The first book is called Dark Lover, I believe.
by Patrice Michelle July 18th, 2005 at 12:17 pmPatrice you’re too funny!!! You know I’ll pick your book up, you goob.
(I have the first two.) Do you remember who Dark Lover is written by?
by Jordan July 18th, 2005 at 12:22 pmA goob? hehehe, Jordan. Thanks! I really hope you like it!
Dark Lover is by J.R. Ward. The author must be really new because I couldn’t find a website on him…er…her? LOL!
by Patrice Michelle July 18th, 2005 at 12:28 pmBut I believe it’s a six book series or something like that.
Jordan, try Whitley Striber’s ‘The Hunger’. Have you read that one? Friggin’ fantastic!
by Trace July 18th, 2005 at 1:03 pmDark Lover is by JR Ward. I think it’s the one PBW recommended on her blog.
by D. Angel July 19th, 2005 at 12:18 amPatrice, I thought that title sounded vaguely familiar. I actually have it in my TBB pile. It sounds interesting. If it’s good, it should keep me busy for a while. (Especially if they have six books planned.) Thanks!
by Jordan July 19th, 2005 at 1:41 pmTrace, I haven’t, but I’ve heard wonderful things about that book. Dh LOVES the movie. (He has read the book too.;)
by Jordan July 19th, 2005 at 1:42 pmD., Thanks for reminding me where I got that book from. I should’ve known it was a PBW recommendation.
by Jordan July 19th, 2005 at 1:43 pmHas anyone read Crimson City? If so, what did you think of it?
