Contests-My Love/Hate Relationship

For those of you who haven’t heard, Harlequin Blaze is holding a contest. The cut off date is August 31st. Now normally I wouldn’t consider entering this contest because I’ve tried writing Blazes in the past with less than stellar results. The only reason I’m considering it now is because they’ve widened what they’re looking for. We’re talking vampires here people. Strange story lines. Things I ‘might’ actually be able to write. Snort.

I know I’m probably glutton for punishment. My track record with contests is pretty hit and miss. I should’ve considered ALL the possible repercussions when I entered previous contests, even the ones I finaled in. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda… It’s all water under the bridge now. So what makes this time different? (Other than the fact contests are fun and addictive.:) I’d be entering work I’ve already started as opposed to stuff aimed specifically at the contest. Yes, in the past I was very bad. I’d actually take the time to come up with a piece for whatever contest I targeted. (Not everytime, but certainly the last contest I entered.) I’m not proud of it, but it’s the truth.

This time I’ve decided to take a different approach. Less attachment to outcome. If I end up entering (still not sure), it’ll be with something I’m excited about. (Shocking, I know.) All that’s left to do is decide. Eany, meany, miney, mo…

  1. *lol* In my case, I want to enter a writing contest, but at the last minute my Muses go into this argument about whether the story should go this or that way, and I panic so I end bowing out of the contest. (Yeah, I chicken out. There, I said it.) The only one I submitted to was the Vamprotica, and I did to spite my Muses. I stuck to this idea, lame as it was, and wrote it. I didn’t have it critiqued or anything. Warring with my Muses took too much of my time. But I sent it anyway. I’m sure the people at Chippewa Press must be laughing their asses off as they read my story. And I’m not even harboring the remotest hope that they’ll pick it up. But in my mind, I felt like I taught my Muses a lesson - not to mess around with me. That’s all that counts. *vbg*

  2. Contests were good to me, I confess, but the important thing here is that you might really enjoy writing for Blaze. It’s an exciting place to be right now. Lots of story options that weren’t there before. So good luck!

  3. You should definitely enter, Jordan. You never know what may come of it!! :o)

  4. Go for it!!

  5. Silma, First off, good luck with the contest you entered. Secondly, it’s time to pluck that chicken and kick those muses in the shin. As long as you go into contests with the attitude that you simply want feedback, then you’ll receive exactly what you expect. Nudge. Nudge. Nudge. :-D

  6. Thanks Jo! That’s why I’m seriously considering the contest. I know it’s a long shot, but like I said before, I’m going into it with no attachment to outcome.

  7. Thanks Patrice! At least this time I’d be entering it for the right reasons.

  8. Thanks Syl!

  9. Toss in your hat, Jordan!
If I could find a spare few minutes, I’d joing you. ;-)

  10. I say go for it!!

    and

  11. Thanks Raine! It all depends on if I can get my chapters one and two switched around.

  12. Thanks Sasha!

  13. I was gonna enter but……I got distracted =)

    Good luck!

  14. I resisted the urge to enter the contest (because they are fun and addictive and I already entered or planning to enter two others) until I saw that blurb about new ideas, even vampires, and a little light bulb went off in my head! I still need to write the synopsis and brainstorm a few plot points, and there’s not much of August left! Good luck if you decide to enter!!

  15. Thanks Cece!

  16. Joely, That’s what caught my attention too. I’m still debating. There are a lot of factors to consider. Good luck with your entry!!!
