Lord of War

We just got back from seeing Lord of War. It was a decent movie with a pretty disturbing message. By disturbing, I mean it was based on true events. I didn’t know that going into the movie. Nicolas Cage is well cast as the lead in this picture. He plays the whole thing straight, which works for this character. Dh said it could’ve been a great movie if they would’ve only made the character someone conflicted by his choices. I hadn’t thought about it, but he’s right. It’s entertaining, but difficult to feel anything for Cage’s character because he’s dead inside.

Also, picked up ‘What the Bleep do we know?’ yesterday. I really have no idea what this movie is about, but so many people online have recommended it that I thought I’d try it out. I normally only do that with books and only after I’ve read the blurb, so this is a first for me. :-)

Have you ever bought a movie or a book that you knew nothing about based solely on online ravings?

  1. Jordan, I’m a weird one. I DON’T buy books that people have raved about. For some odd reason, if they book is getting a ton of attention, it loses appeal to me. I haven’t yet read any of Dan Brown’s books for that very reason. Is that bizarre or what?

    Ummm…nope.
I’m rather surprised to discover that, actually.

  3. I have bought books based on online hype =( but I tend to avoid movies that get a lot of hype. I have no clue why.

  4. P. S. I rented season one disk one of Lost yesterday =) It was great. I’m coming to the dark side.

  5. I’ve been known to buy books that get terrible reviews (like getting an “F” on the AAR site, or 1-heart on The Romance Reader site,) just to see if it could possibly be that bad. It’s usually a decent read : )

  6. Trace, I tend to do that with popular fiction like Dan Brown or Clancy. (Avoid them because of all the talk.) I managed to read the Da Vinci Code about a year or so after the big hype. It was interesting. Lot of food for thought.

  7. Raine, That surprises me. :-)

  8. Cece, That’s how I normally am. This is the first time I’ve bought a movie based on word of mouth. As for Lost, *ggg*, it’s addictive, isn’t it? New season starts Wednesday btw. (wg)

  9. Robin, I’ve heard of people doing that, but I wasn’t sure if it was the truth or not. Thanks for solving that mini-mystery for me. :-D I’ve never purchased a book based on bad reviews. I’m not that adventurous.

  10. ‘Solely on’? Nope. But the raves will get my attention and probably cause me to investigate further. The results of that investigation will decided whether or not I buy.

  11. What the Bleep is supposed to be based on the premise that our thoughts have a huge effect on our lives. I haven’t seen it but I want to!

And yes, I frequently buy books without knowing what they’re about because I’ve heard they’re good. Blurbs rarely do justice to a book anyway so why bother? I like surprises. :)

  12. Im pretty finicky in my choice of books, TV or movies. My tastes tend to be different from most of my friends. They like downer real-life-is-depressing type books and movies and I usually something more uplifting. So if they rave about something I know to steer clear. LOL I wont buy or rent something solely because of online ravings, although I do take those into consideration. Sometimes I find them to be more insightful than the professional reviews. Mostly, I enjoy haunting libraries, bookstores and videostores myself in search of something that strikes me as just right for my mood at the moment.

  13. Jaq, Sounds like you do a good job of checking the books out. I’ve never purchased a movie like this.

  14. Amy, If that’s what the movie is about, then it’s absolutely true. :-) It’s funny how everyone picks books based on different criteria.

  15. Daisy, I have a few friends that I know to never listen to their recommendations in books and movies. LOL! I’m sure we all do. ;-)

  16. Daisy! LOL I don’t read real life is a downer stuff, but i do occasionally watch it. I’m not much of one for romantic comedies though there are exceptions to the rule–Legally Blonde is my guilty pleasure =) I suppose that’s more comedy than romance but still, she’s so blonde and so unapologetic about it I love it.
