Wow Lauren, that’s a whole lot of suckage. Seriously. I bet you couldn’t get out of there fast enough. I’ve only seen ‘dead’ eyes in sociopaths. Luckily, they’ve all been on television.

I think when people dull their natural senses, something modern life contributes to between all the extra stimuli and the reliance on external validation vs. tuning into the internal voice to recognize truth and clarity, then it’s easy for evil to slip by, unnoticed, and get away with the horses before you realize the barn door’s been opened. That’s the frightening part. Because evil uses that as a duck blind.

I have seen evil in someone’s eyes, more than once. Before I took time off work to be home with my kids (and discovered this writing gig) I worked with abused and neglected children and domestic violence victims and survivors. I’ve stared a man in the face who kicked his 2 year old to death and had the audacity to tell me it was his right to discipline the child that way. And I saw a man who later killed his estranged wife in an alley where she’d dropped her child off for supervised visitation. He later killed the child and himself in San Francisco.

Evil isn’t vampires, it’s human beings who think they’re above the rest of us and can do anything they want to, no matter the cost.

All in all, this job is way better for my nerves than my old one was.

In real life, I think I’ve only sensed it inside someone. But I knew it when I did, knew what it was & that I should get away from it. One of those people turned out to be a multiple murderer who never showed remorse.

And I’ve seen it in dreams, of course–one recurring one that never failed to scare the sh!t out of me…it featured a very well-dressed gentleman who knew my name, who I was, had a beautiful, seductive smile, always seemed pleasant–and always assured me that no matter what I did, I’d always belong to him, and I’d never escape.

He was also, btw, the best-looking man I’ve ever seen in my life! Ack!!

I’m such a hopeless realist. In a case like this, I’d probably consider what could have been wrong with the wine I had before I went to bed.
