RWA Changes

Well this should be interesting. I finished reading the changes the RWA made to their bylaws. Yowza! This should be interesting. You can catch some of the action here.

  1. Every summer it’s something, isn’t it? *BEG* It has to be the heat that gets us all hot and bothered.

I’m RWA to the core, could care less about who is and is not recognized. I care about readership, a publisher that works to help and support me, and the royalty checks. Plenty of recognized publishers score a big fat zero when it comes to working well with authors. Would you submit to them, just because they had the recongition, when they may not necessarily be a good fit for you and your career?

  2. Ursula, You’re right. Every year it’s something different. *ggg* As for publishers, there are certain ones that I avoid, but that’s a personal preference thing on my part. :)

  3. Holy flying furballs, Batman! I’m just going to hunker down with my laptop, I have too much work to do and no time or energy to spare for even trying to follow this. Although if I’m reading the new rules correctly Red Sage is no longer RWA recognized either, or have they been publishing novel-length works for 3 years? I know Angela Knight’s was the first. Agh. Back to work…

  4. Wasn’t The Forever Kiss RS’s first full length book? If so, Amazon shows the date of the book as July 31, 2004.

  5. I’m sorry, but I have to wonder if the rule-makers involved in all of this need to stir up a bit of shit now and then to get their jollies. And I’m trying to make myself think that maybe I’m just not understanding it properly. The language is just vague enough to make you wonder if this just might eliminate most if not ALL e-publishers, most of whom probably sell the majority of their books from publisher-generated websites. And no, a $1K advance isn’t considered a lot from a print pub–but an e-publisher?? Phfffft!!

    Unfuckingbelievable.

  6. Charli, As Patrice mentioned, it’ll be three years since release of AK book. But, they may go when it was contracted, which would put them under the wire and keep them qualified. I do believe that all the epubs will be unrecognized, if I’m reading it right since it says AND a $1K advance–not OR a $1K advance. I bet we hear the shouting all the way from Dallas when that general meeting starts. :-O

  7. Patrice, Like I said to Charli, they may go by when it was contracted. Not sure. I think Red Sage will be the only one that remains recognized when the dust settles.

  8. Raine, I think this came about because of Triskelion. So many authors called RWA when the sh*t started hitting the fan there. I think the Board decided the only way to avoid that sort of thing in the future is to tighten the regulations. On the flipside, it should be easier for any epub author to join PAN. I know that’s not much, but it’s better than a kick in the bullocks. ;)

  9. So, this would mean because a publisher like Whiskey Creek Press offers a paperback printing option for ninety bucks, they’re not considered eligible? Oh boy.

  10. Sorry, comment nine is mine. My ID didn’t come out. :)

  11. Pretty much any publisher who charges directly or indirectly for publishing is considered a vanity press. So yes, Whiskey Creek Press would be ineligible.

  12. No worries, Bernard. :)

  13. Guess the agm was kinda rocky…still waiting for pertinent details.

  14. Rebecca, Lauren Dane just posted something from her editor at Samhain. They’re talking about being ‘unrecognized’ or whatever they’re calling it now. It’s actually a well-written post.

  15. Thanks!

  16. Rebecca, You’re welcome. :)
