Torchwood

Did anyone catch the premiere of Torchwood on BBC America? I just got done watching it (I’d taped it.) and really liked it. It was far different than what I’d expected. I guess I thought it would be lighter and funnier. I’m glad I was wrong. The darker edge makes the show much more enjoyable. The characters sucked me in immediately and made me care. The story-line made me wonder where they’re going to take this show. Can’t wait to find out. :) The show is no Jekyll, but it’s good. Speaking of which, did you all see the end of that series? OMG!!! I couldn’t believe it. I did NOT see that one coming. :-O

If you watched Torchwood (or Jekyll), what did you think?

  1. I’ve actually seen the whole series some months back (even though, yes, I do live in the States) because I’m a total Dr. Who geek and that means, of course, I had to get my hands on Torchwood as soon as humanely possible. I really loved the show at first but I’m going to say that I hated the way they took it, the last four or so episodes (with the time traveler episode for those who’ve also seen it and know what I’m talking about) and the season finale blows, in my very humble opinion.

Now, all that said, don’t let it discourage you from watching more because I’m fully planning on watching the second season and am purely miserable that I have to wait so long for the next season to show in England.

  2. Oh man, Angela, I hate to hear that. I’ll still watch the show, but that bums me out.

  3. Yes, yes! I saw Torchwood and I liked what I saw. Of course, I remember Gwen from her stint on Dr. Who, which was fun. And I loved Captain Jack from moment one.

I’m also a huge Dr. Who geek, and wept like a baby when Rose left. I also ADORED the recent two-parter. Holy crap that was some fine writing.

    Uh…sorry. I get carried away.

And I’m glad you said that about Jekyll, because I’ve taped the whole thing and plan on watching it when I finish this book. What a nice reward, eh?

  4. Jo, *g* That is actually a great reward. You are going to LOVE Jekyll. The writing is superb and the acting is top-notch. It rocked. :)

I’m actually embarrassed to admit that I haven’t seen Dr. Who. There are rumors that the lead actor in Jekyll will be the next Dr. Who, so keep that in mind while watching it.

  5. Torchwood reminds me of the 2001 series Special Unit 2, which I liked a lot. The only problem is it has none of the humor; and if the characters get any more gay than they were in the first show, I won’t be watching it. The only squad Jack could be Captain of is the Village People, singing YMCA. :) I liked Dr. Who with Rose and the other guy.

  6. Bernard, It is a little like Special Unit 2. I think Torchwood is a little darker/grittier. You’re right about the humor, but I’m okay without it. The show definitely was risque, which I thought was cool since we rarely see anything risque on TV here in the states…unless it has to do with half naked women. As for Jack, it’s my understanding that the actor is gay in real life. Again, I’m not concerned with that aspect of the show. Shrug.

  7. If risgue is two men kissing, or the lead male character making sexual innuendos to his male assistant, then yea, I guess I don’t get into the risque thing. :) No problem though, I was hoping for a Special Unit 2, and I got Gay Unit 2. That’s what they make channel changers for. I forgot to ask if anyone has watched Burn Notice. I don’t know who put together the cast for it, but they really nailed it.

  8. Bernard, LOL! Too saucy for you, eh? ;) I love Burn Notice too. Great show. Great concept. Good cast. Hate that there are only two episodes left. Of course, I’m still bummed that they cancelled the Dresden Files. :(

  9. Jo, you’re not the only one who sobbed like a baby when Rose left. I even blogged about it at the time. Dr. Who needs to stop playing fast and loose with my emotions ;)

  10. I haven’t really paid any attention to Torchwood, but Jekyll was fabulous! I loved it that much I bought the DVD for a couple of my friends so that they too could drool over Jimmy Nesbitt!

  11. That really stinks they canceled the Dresden Files. They don’t say why on the SciFi website either. It had pretty good numbers, and a growing following. I probably jinxed it by watching. Maybe I’ll tune in to a couple more Torchwood episodes. :)

  12. Angela, I think they’re out to get you. ;)

  13. Karen, I understand why you bought the DVD. That show was SO well done. I couldn’t believe it. I would’ve never guessed that a show could do a successful spin on the Dr. Jekyll story. Great stuff!

  14. Bernard, So it was your fault. *ggg* ;) I think it stinks too, since the numbers were growing. They were as good as some of the other shows that they renewed. It doesn’t make sense.

You’re bad. Snort. Don’t you dare get Torchwood cancelled. (wg)
