My dh and I have started what we call reading nights. We pick certain days of the week, and then spend the evening reading. No TV. No distractions. I thought it was a cool idea. What’s really been interesting is how much better I feel after spending the evening reading a book. I mean I’ve always loved to read and goodness knows I have a mountain of a TBR pile waiting on the shelves for me, but designating an evening (or a few a week) to reading has been amazingly relaxing. That’s something I didn’t expect to get out of our reading nights. Relaxation is a lovely biproduct of disconnecting. You all should try it sometime, if you haven’t already.
As an aside, I thought that this site was a great idea.

It’s amazing to realize how much stress NOISE produces. And TV produces a lot of noise, including an electronic hum. It’s incredible how quiet it is when you shut everything off. I think we need that quiet on a regular basis.
Yay for reading! I’m trying to do more of that, too. I want to catch up my TBR pile by the end of this year.
by Charli October 19th, 2007 at 4:31 pmYes, I think it’s easy to forget until you unplug. We’ve really been enjoying the evenings that we turn everything off. I’ll never be able to catch up on my TBR pile *cough*becauseIkeepaddingtoit*cough*, but at least I can make a dent in it.
by Jordan October 19th, 2007 at 4:51 pmMoonlight was hot last night. I hope it catches on. I still managed to read later.
by BernardL October 20th, 2007 at 8:07 amMoonlight really rocked last night! I’m really liking this show the more I watch.
I’m happy to say I unplug and read every night with my daughter. We crawl into bed, I read a chapter to her of our book, then we each read separately for about 20 mins. She reads one of her Chickadee magazines and I read one of my books. It’s great.

by BernardL October 20th, 2007 at 8:51 amBernard, I agree. I really enjoyed last night’s episode. I actually think the show is getting better. You and me both.
by Jordan October 20th, 2007 at 4:07 pmVivi, Yep, the story is heating up.
Oh, that’s very cool about reading with your daughter. Wonderful habit you’re getting her into.
by Jordan October 20th, 2007 at 4:08 pmBernard, I really hope they give the show a chance. Glad to hear that you managed to read.
The only reading I managed was the first three chapters of the new book. I think they sound okay. The writing is better than I originally thought, but I do worry that there isn’t enough action (ie it’s not exciting enough). I guess I’ll have to wait and see.
by Jordan October 20th, 2007 at 4:10 pmWhen the television is off and the kids are asleep, I love to spend time alone with my husband. Even if he’s on the computer and I’m on the laptop or we’re snuggled up talking and drinking tea, whatever. The quiet is so necessary!
by Lauren Dane October 20th, 2007 at 4:59 pmSorry about the double comment, I don’t know how it happened. Actually, I think they can ruin the show with too much action. They’ve managed to achieve a real connection between the two main characters. If they blend a small amount of Vampire action into the mix, the romance part will carry the show.
by BernardL October 20th, 2007 at 6:09 pmLauren, Yes, it is. It’s easy to forget to forge that bond.
by Jordan October 20th, 2007 at 6:53 pmBernard, No worries.
I think you’re right. The show is part detective mainstay and part love story. It’s a fine line to walk. I know that Blood Ties has trouble finding even ground.
