Mood–Tiny Bit Better

My mood is a little bit better today. No, I’m still not over Moonlight’s cancellation, but I’ve resolved to simply ‘dislike’ the powers that be. It works for me.

I had to work on a partial yesterday, so I didn’t manage to start my third book. I did get the partial in and it’s being sent out with my other partial, so I now have a few things circulating. Yay! I have finally received the movies I wanted. I find it helps sometimes to get ‘in the mood’ for a book, if you watch films that are similar in setting. (Note: I didn’t say story.) I have friends that watch historical documentaries and dramas before they start their books. It puts them in the right mindset. Other authors put together playlists for their books. I haven’t done that because I find lyrics distracting. In another life, I used to write songs, so it’s easy for me to go off on tangents. I can listen to music beforehand or if there are no lyrics involved (ie soundtracks, classical, etc.), but movies work best for me since they help with visualization. Anyway, those are my plans for today. (ie watch movies and write) :)

I do need your help. This plea goes out to readers and writers. I am going to try to put together homemade bookplates hopefully without them looking homemade. What I’d like to know is if you’ve seen any bookplates that you’ve liked? If so, why did you like them? What information do you expect to find on a bookplate other than an autograph? Thanks ahead of time for all your help. :)

  1. I’ve printed bookplates on Avery labels, and I gotta say there has to be a better way. You can’t cut the suckers apart in any sort of way that doesn’t look ridiculous.

So I’ll be camping out here looking for advice.

  2. Charli, I’ve done the same thing in the past and they look pretty bad. I’m going to see if they have any higher end stock this weekend.

  3. Here’s a thought….do the avery, save the file on a thumb drive and take it to Kinkos where they have those really nice color laser printers. Not sure if that would totally work but it might be worth a shot.

I’ve honestly never seen any. I do know you can order some blank ones from Friendly Spirit (just google them).

  4. Amie, Thanks! I’ll look into it. I’m probably going to go the Avery blank version with my book cover jpg on it. Hopefully that will look okay.

  5. I love going to the movies at the cinema. I go every week rain or shine, get my diet coke and choc dip ice cream then settle back before the big screen. I get so inspired.

By the way, what’s a bookplate? Sorry for the ignorance?

  6. I’ve got one bookplate I did myself for a bookseller that we both thought came out well — I printed it out on sheets of large black adhesive labels and signed them so all the bookseller had to do was peel them off and stick them in the book. I also managed to fit the titles of my series backlist on it as it was for book five or six or something. I’ll see if I can find it and send you the .jpg, Jordan.

  7. Suzanne, Movies are great. I wish we went that often. For a while we were, then somehow we got behind.

It’s a sticker that goes inside an author’s book that they sign when they can’t be somewhere in person.

  8. Lynn, That would help a lot. I haven’t seen many of them and the ones that I have seen were not the best quality—that includes ones I did years ago.
