Internet Down

Yesterday, my internet was down. In fact, it didn’t come back up until this morning. You’d think I would get a lot of writing done during that time. I didn’t. In fact, I didn’t manage to write at all yesterday. Most of my day was spent on the phone with the cable company. Did I forget to mention that my phone was out for part of the day, too? Yeah, it was that kind of day.

Dh came home early from a brutal week and we went to see WANTED. I’ve looked forward to this movie more than any other this year. Well, it wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t great. There were some cool aspects of the film, but the storyline dropped in a few places. This left me scratching my head on a few rather important revelations. I thought the performances were good. There were a lot of over-the-top visual effects that had people giggling in our theater. Yes, they were THAT over-the-top. The movie made me think they’d gone for a cross between the Matrix and Fight Club, but it never quite reached that level of cleverness. It seemed like it was trying too hard. It practically jumped up and down yelling about how cool it was, how innovative. It shouldn’t have had to, since there was a lot of good material to work with. I’ve read that it followed the graphic novel pretty closely. That’s good, but there were a lot of things left unexplained and unanswered that should’ve been addressed with dialogue–not bullets. IMO it shouldn’t have relied on special effects in place of content, but it did. In the end, I still say it wasn’t a bad movie, but it certainly could’ve been so much better.

If you’re interested in seeing it, I’d say go. It’s worth watching. The violence is ridiculously insane, but displayed a lot like it was in 300, so it doesn’t make you squeamish. At least it didn’t make me squeamish. I suppose if you found 300 upsetting, then you should pass on this film. It’s bloody.

There was so much good in the film and so much bad that they kind of cancel each other out, leaving me somewhat disappointed by the overall experience. I’d actually be very curious to see what you all think of the film, if you go see it. Please leave your reviews in the comments. Up next for us is Wall:E. I hope it’s better.

  1. Was there any romance in the movie as hinted at by the previews?

  2. Nope, just some flirting and a kiss, but it was all calculated.

  3. Your movies get to us a little later but am looking forward to it. I finally got to see Iron Man and enjoyed it. I liked that he didn’t have super powers, that it was technology that made him super. The only part I didn’t like was the ending with the cliched great fight between good and evil though not sure how else they could have concluded it. I would have preferred a show down out in the Afghanistan desert perhaps.

  4. I was hoping you’d seen it, Jordan!
I tipped off to the matinee today, instead of doing the yardword I should’ve done, lol.

Will probably post something a little more thorough on my blog later, but right now–yes, I pretty much agree with what you’ve said here. My hopes may have been too high, because yeah, it was worth the matinee price and it held my attention–but I thought it could’ve been three times better with a little more subtlety, and perhaps better direction.
A couple of the stunts and effects did make me laugh, but that was ok. The acting was pretty good, and yes–there was uber-violence, some of it quite unnecessary imho, especially during the training sessions.
And wasted opportunities. A bit of romance would’ve given it flavor. And don’t tell me you’ve got a guy who ‘knows everything there is to know about guns’, and not have him tell/teach me anything about guns!
My biggest issue was with the…how to put it without a spoiler?…primary direct of Fate? Nearly dropped my popcorn. They accepted orders from that without questioning them? 😯

And have I gone on long enough, lol? 😛
It was worth seeing. But the potential was OH so much better than the result, I think.

  5. Suzanne, I really loved Iron Man. I loved that they humanized the story. That’s what made you pull for him. And yes, it was nice that it was based in science. 🙂

  6. Raine, Exactly. I’m still scratching my head over them not questioning the last hits that were issued. If he’d been doing what James said he was doing, then why didn’t anyone question the validity of the final orders? Still shaking my head over that one.

  7. Ha. We saw it today during the matinee and I wanted to know if you had the same reaction I did! 😆

I am not satisfied with the ending. At. All. She didn’t even question that Sloan might have been lying? When he lied about other things? And if there’d been a romance, it would’ve added to the conflict when she was sent to kill him. Overall, disappointed. Mostly because it could have been amazing.

    Next for me: Get Smart!

  8. Charli, Nope, the ending was interesting, but not logical. That’s exactly what I thought. Why no one questioned it left me scratching my head.

I plan to see Get Smart this week.

  9. Yay that you’re going to see Wall-E. I can’t wait to see that one. Let us know what you think when you see it, please:-).

  10. I saw Wanted…and I *&^%ing LOVED it. And the ending didn’t bother me at all. Damn, it was so uber over the top, it was awesome. I’d go see it again in a second. And yes I thought it similiar in story telling to Fight Club. Although it didn’t have that kind of caliber of story, it still rocked. And who knew James McAvoy could be so damn sexy!

  11. Ellen, I will. We’re going to see it this week. 🙂

  12. Vivi, LOL! Why am I not surprised? 😉 I thought James McAvoy did a terrific job. The ending still has me scratching my head. Why didn’t anyone consider that he might be lying? That doesn’t seem logical to me.

  13. Yeah, that’s true. He could’ve been making it all up…but in a way I thought it was a justified ending….the fact that their names came up…

  14. Vivi, That’s my point. How do we know if their names really came up? To take that at face value given the information that was uncovered wasn’t very bright. 😆
