We went out bright and early on Christmas morning to catch Sherlock Holmes at the theater. It’s the movie that I’ve been really looking forward to seeing. I quite enjoyed the interaction between Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. Their bantering was hilarious. The movie itself is enjoyable. Not as good as I was hoping it would be, but still quite entertaining. It has a very steampunk look. In fact, the feel of the film itself is steampunky, so if you’re expecting a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ film, then you might very well be disappointed. There are definite nods to the books and the old films, but that’s about it. The movie is set up for a sequel, so I don’t think this will be the last Holmes and Watson adventure we see.
If you like steampunk and aren’t a diehard Sherlock Holmes fan (ie someone who believes that the fiction shouldn’t be played with), then you’ll enjoy this film.

I liked the interaction between Holmes and Watson (definite bromance chemistry there) and the visual (steampunky) quality of the film. Still, I think the movie was a failure (too bad because I was really looking forward to it). I didn’t particularly care for the script.
by Toni December 27th, 2009 at 11:48 pmI love the look of the Holmes movie, and I hope they do more! That’s the one I’m really looking forward to.
by Charli December 28th, 2009 at 6:27 amThanks for the review. I’ve read some very differing reviews which seem to fall in line with your take about not expecting a fundamentalist approach to Holmes.
by BernardL December 28th, 2009 at 5:01 pmFrom the trailers, I knew the movie wouldn’t be a traditional Holmes film. Still, it looks like fun. Anytime there are bombs exploding, I’m there. And I’ll watch anything starring Robert Downey, Jr.
by Delilah Devlin December 28th, 2009 at 5:18 pmToni, The script was definitely a little all over the place. I agree that it didn’t live up to the previews.
by Jordan Summers December 28th, 2009 at 6:16 pmCharli, It’s very steampunk visually.
by Jordan Summers December 28th, 2009 at 6:16 pmBernard, I went in not expecting it to be like the books. I figured it was a sort of ‘reinventing’ of Sherlock Holmes. It’s definitely that. I was just hoping for a sharper story and better pacing. I thought the characters were interesting and fun. It’s entertaining enough, but it could’ve been much better.
by Jordan Summers December 28th, 2009 at 6:18 pmDelilah, It was fun enough. And Downey is Downey. He has a lot of witty dialogue or ad libs depending on what they went with. *g*
by Jordan Summers December 28th, 2009 at 6:20 pmI enjoyed it. Loved the newly ripped RDJ, and the chemistry between him and Jude law was great. I think the visual aspects definitely outdid the script, and hopefully if/when they do a sequel, the story will be a bit stronger.
by Sasha December 31st, 2009 at 2:18 pmSasha, Yeah, Robert was in really great shape. The chemistry with Jude was fabulous. Here’s hoping the script of the next one is a lot better.
