Random Thoughts

Today is my mom’s birthday. Although we cannot be together, she is in my thoughts. May all her wishes come true. Love you!!!

I know I’ve been extremely quiet. I’ve had a lot going on lately. Life things, not writing things. Some are good, some are inconvenient, but isn’t that the way life goes? I am rolling with the punches.

Went out shopping today. Dh and I are planning a big trip to Europe soon. (I’m back to hitting the French language class hard and getting the cameras ready so that I can add photos and video of book settings to my new website.) We decided it would be cool to cruise to Europe, instead of fly. The cruise holds four formal balls during the voyage. Needless to say, I didn’t have the clothes for it…or the shoes. It’s fun, but weird to shop for formal wear. Fortunately, it didn’t take long and several of the items were on sale. I think I’m set for every occasion now.

Like a lot of writers, I’ve been paying quite a bit of attention to the changing market. I do wonder if publishing is following the path of record companies. They seem to be, which is not good. A friend of mine was saying that it’s probably only a matter of time before the e-publishers go out of business. Some of New York will not be far behind, especially as they continue to out price the authors releasing their own work. I do think this opens up a lot of opportunities for writers. I know I’m not a well-known name, but I’m banking on my name being recognizable enough to bring in a decent influx of readers. We’ll see what happens when I put the ebooks up on Kindle. The current plan is to re-release the back inventory as I get the rights back. I’m also going to write a lot of tie-in novellas–some for the Dead World series, some for the Phantom Warriors, a follow up to Gothic Passions (which has been done for years), and maybe even a new Atlantean’s Quest story. That should keep readers coming back and get new ones interested in the old series’. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not J.A. Konrath, but he is an inspiration. 🙂

I’m also continuing to work on new projects that I’ll eventually submit to agents. Not in a hurry. If it happens this year, great. If not, oh well.

  1. Oh, please more Phantom Warriors! : D

My first Kindle projects will be getting shorts that are in anthologies but that I have rights to out there. I don’t have any of my backlist back. It is undoubtedly time to pester St. Martin’s about the two titles not in e-form which I’d like to do myself and NOT price same as a trade paperback, gah.

The times they are a changing for sure. Publishing doesn’t seem to be changing with it, which disturbs me greatly.

  2. Charli,

*ggg* I did start a Phantom Warrior story a while back. Strangely, I actually remember what the story was supposed to be about. Might be a sign. 😉

I plan to do that, too with those novellas. It’ll be a work in progress. I have a lot of books to get up there. I plan to have my old agent pursue the rights to one of my Kensington books because it has never been released in ebook. It can’t hurt to try.

    You and me both.

  3. That’s a great idea to add new material to enhance interest in the older pieces, especially with the widening use of the Kindle and other mobile readers. I hope your voyage is pleasant. First light and last light on the ocean are sights I’ve never forgotten.

  4. Bernard, I thought it was a good idea. It helps that I already had story ideas attached to several of these older series.

Thank you!!! I am really looking forward to seeing both the sunrise and the sunset, while we’re at sea. 🙂

  5. From what I’m hearing, going Kindle is pretty successful. I know of a couple of people who are going that route.

I’m total green with jealousy about the whole European cruise thing. Can’t think of a better way to travel.

  6. Liz,

Yep, a lot of people seem to be having a decent amount of success with Kindle. I think if I could
at least build a cushion it would take the pressure off of other areas.

I really hope we like going on the cruise. We are definitely looking forward to it. 🙂
